A corset is not about cinching, it is about support. It holds the bodice, takes the load off the shoulders and gives the posture the dress was designed for.

Selection
A corset bodice has a practical advantage that is rarely mentioned: it lifts the weight of the dress off the shoulders and spreads it across the torso. In a heavy gown with a train you feel the difference within an hour.
The second is the lacing at the back, which leaves room to adjust in both directions. If the wedding is months away and your weight may change, this is the calmest construction there is.
The corset should hold you, not the other way round. If you find yourself holding your breath, or the dress rides up when you raise your arms, that is a question of fit — solved in the atelier, not by enduring it all evening.
