Lace wedding dresses

The most bridal of fabrics and the most varied: from near-weightless Chantilly to guipure dense enough to hold its own shape.

Lace differs by pattern and by ground. Fine Chantilly lies against the body and adds almost no volume; guipure is denser, holds a line and works well on a bodice; lace with raised appliqué gives relief you can see even in a photograph.

Look at two things: how the pattern is matched at the seams, and what happens along the hem. On a good dress the lace is laid so the seams disappear, and the edge is finished with a scallop rather than cut straight. That is handwork — and the main reason for the difference in price.
