An outdoor ceremony has its own rules, and they begin with the ground underfoot. Grass, sand, gravel, decking — none of them are friends of a long train or a fine hem. A floor-length dress with no train, or a detachable one, is more practical.

The second is wind. A light skirt in an open place takes on a life of its own, and that is beautiful right up until it gets in the way. Layered tulle behaves more calmly than a single layer of chiffon: the layers steady each other.

About shoes: a stiletto heel sinks into grass. A block heel, a wedge or beautiful flat sandals save the day — and we set the hem to those shoes specifically.
